In the early 1960’s, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Marshall Urist discovered a family of proteins that stimulates the cells responsible for growing bone (osteoblasts) and cartilage (chondrocytes). Based upon the principle of his findings that bone tissue (bone matrix) regenerates itself, Dr. Urist named these proteins Bone Morphogenetic Proteins - or BMPs.
The impact of Dr. Urist’s contribution to medicine and healthcare was first realized in the 1990’s when commercial bone-protein preparation containing BMP’s and key growth factors were used by orthopedic surgeons for bone healing and spinal fusions. In 2002, the FDA approved select individual BMPs for use in surgical procedures as a more effective way to grow and heal bone.
Today ZyCal is revolutionizing bone and joint health with the introduction of Ostinol™, the first oral protein complex to contain BMPs and associated bone and cartilage growth factors.
