Dr. Urist’s discovery was published in the prestigious journal of Science in 1965 title, The Autoinduction of Bone, ushering in the age of osteoinduction – the ability for a protein complex to turn on stem cells and grow bone and cartilage tissue. As cell and molecular biology understanding increase in the 1970s and 1980s scientist came to understand that Urist’s discovery was not a single protein but rather a protein complex – a specialized form of collagen which retained the natural signaling proteins and growth factors which caused stem cells to transform and grow new bone and cartilage.
